Fulham Boys School Aspirations Afternoon Thursday 23rd November 2017
Dear friend of the Fulham Boys School,
Following our hugely successful event in 2016, I would like to invite you or a colleague to join us at Fulham Boys School for our Y9 Aspirations Afternoon event. It runs on Thursday 23rd November from 1230-1600 and starts with lunch (if you do not wish to join us for lunch then please arrive at 1315).
The idea is to inspire our 122 Year 9 (aged 13-14) boys and open their eyes to some of the different career paths that are available. We are inviting in a range of professionals who would be happy to enthuse about their passions and experiences in order that our boys widen their horizons and begin to think about how they make themselves ready for the future.
The format of the conversations you will have will be a ‘speed-networking’ approach. Boys will have three key questions to choose from and each conversation will last 5 minutes. Guests should bring a prop/ object pertaining to their career area as this tends to be an effective way of immediately engaging boys .
We will group guests so that boys have the opportunity to talk to a good range of people but not everyone. We encourage follow up contact and further ‘in depth’ conversations through visits post-event, at your convenience and where possible.
Do you think you or any of your colleagues would be able to attend? We are (in addition) looking for people with ‘hands-on’ or practical careers and so if you have contacts in skilled manual careers then please forward this email or put us in touch.

The structure of the event will be:
1230: Guests arrive at Beaumont Avenue Wing (W14 9LS) and have informal lunch with all FBS boys
1330: Hall final preparations for event
1340: Introduction in hall for guests and boys (122 Year 9 boys)
1345: Speed networking round 1 in hall (12 bases in one hour)
1445: refreshment break
1500: Speed networking round 2 in hall (12 bases in one hour)
1600: Event closes
1605: Departure of guests (refreshments and networking)
1610: Boys reflect upon event and explore work experience options for Y10 - further opportunities to discuss with boys if guests available to stay on
1650: Boys go to form rooms for PM registration
The boys will choose from these three questions and will make notes from your answers in booklets
If I wanted to be a ….(your career)..... what experience and training would I need?
We want the boys to begin to imagine their possible futures and if they need to start thinking about preparing sooner rather than later. We also want them to think about the skills required, regardless of when you start.
At what point did you decide that you wanted to be/do what you are at present?
Some of us have a clear idea from early on and others have a more winding path. Others of us just fall into what we are doing or choose it because it gives us freedom to do other things. Please explain what event or thought process led to your current situation.
What do you do in a typical week?
Apparently doctors don’t spend all day doing open heart surgery and some policeman do paper work too! Give the boys an insight into the highs and lows of your job so that they realise that they will need a range of skills and also should do some research into whatever areas they are interested in.
Could you please bring a 'prop' with you which reflects your career or career journey. This could be anything which will help the boys to form a memory of the conversation and help with my photos for the website! If your job involves a uniform or specialist clothing it would be helpful if you could wear that for the same reason (memory, not website...well maybe website a bit!). You are very welcome to bring flyers or promotional materials if you want to use these to show the boys anything or give them materials to take away to use with their Enterprise Award folder. This could include photos on a laptop or tablet but each conversation will be only 5 minutes and so videos would not be appropriate unless very short and it'll be too loud for sound!
