KS3: The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas by John Boyne

Accelerated Reader recommended ZPD: 3.5 – 6
Accelerated Reader Target Points: 7

Bored and lonely after his family moves from Berlin to a place called “Out-With” in 1942, Bruno, the son of a Nazi officer, befriends a boy in striped pyjamas who lives behind a wire fence. This 2006 modern classic will introduce you to the horrors of the Holocaust in a fable-like way through the innocent eyes of a young German boy.

KS4: Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury

Accelerated Reader ZPD: 5.2 – 6.0
Accelerated Reader Target Points: 7

In this futuristic novel – one of the earliest in the dystopian genre – the main character struggles with excessive controls on individual liberty, especially the banning and burning of books. Ray Bradbury’s 1953 is particularly relevant at time where social media has a powerful impact on individuals and the importance of reading and searching for truth is becoming more and more important.

Reading MENtors:

NEW opportunity for Reading, Social Enterprise and House Points!

The Reading MENtors scheme aims to boost the reading ages of students in Years 7 and 8 by providing them with an opportunity to read aloud and ask questions about their book to someone just a few years older*, but with a lot more reading experience under their belt. It is also a way to help younger students feel part of the FBS community and for older students to get involved in Social Enterprise. Each week during RealMenRead form time KS3 MENtees will meet their KS4 MENtors for 15 minutes of reading in the library and will record their meeting on their Reading Passport.

To join simply speak to your Form Tutor or English teacher!

*MENtors will be in Years 10 and 11, but Year 9s with high reading ages may be considered.
